Cold and Flu

Symptoms:

-  runny or stuffy nose

-  sneezing

-   sore throat (may be hoarse or cry when eating)

-  headache (inconsolable crying)

-  low grade fever (for flu, the fever may be higher)

-  loss of appetite

-  aches (flu only)

-  chills (flu only)

- fatigue (flu only)

-  weakness (flu only)

Note: The flu develops more quickly than the common cold and may come on suddenly. It is more severe than a cold and can lead to more serious illnesses.

Treatment:

-  acetaminophen  for fever and aches

-  Tepid baths will reduce fever and ease achy muscles

-  New Flu medications are NOT approved by the FDA for children under 12 years old. NEVER give medications to a baby or child that were not prescribed to him.

-  Rest or frequent naps

-  Fluids (electrolyte solutions)

Prevention:

-  hand washing

-   clean baby nasal aspirator with soap and water between each use

-  Ask your child’s doctor about the flu vaccination

Call the doctor if your baby:

-   has a persistent fever (see Fever Guidelines)

-  coughs or sneezes green or gray mucous (or if it is aspirated from the nose)

-  is shaking

-   has labored breathing

-   has blue or gray fingernails or lips

-   is lethargic or hard to waken
